SPOTLIGHT ON LEARNING
Term 1 Learning in Year 5
Maths
In Mathematics during Term 1, Year 5 learnt many different mathematical concepts and how they can be linked together. They enjoyed creating a cross country track around the school using the trundle wheels. They also worked collaboratively to create their own town map with a school, shopping centre, sporting fields and houses. After that they had to calculate the distances between the different landmarks on our maps.
Over the last two weeks of the term, they looked at fractions, learning how to understand how these can be represented. One of the learning tasks was to design a flag for a new country that was ⅜ red, ⅛ green, ¼ blue and ¼ yellow. Here are some examples of the different designs they created.
Science
During Science lessons in Term 1, Year 5 investigated processes and
designed their own board game. They looked at what are technological
inputs and outputs and how we use this in our everyday life. Then, this
knowledge was used to make entertaining board games which include:
moving a Bee Bot around on Taylor’s Tour, navigating Magnificent
Mazes, even taking players on an out of this world adventure!
Visual Arts
In Art they looked at the artists Julian Ashton and Sidney Nolan creating the following artworks.

Term 1 Learning in Year 6
Year 6 has jumped straight back into things this term and what a term it’s going to be! In English, we have started looking at Vincent Lingiari and his instrumental role in improving Aboriginal working rights in the 1960s. This unit allows students to consider the context and perspectives of each of the authors and the devices used to compose informative and engaging texts.
This term also sees the return of the Year 6 Notable Presentation Project. Students have spent time this week choosing and researching their notable Australian who has made a significant impact in our lives. Students will display their information, utilising their research and digital apps to creatively present their information. We cannot wait for the Night of the Notables Presentation Night on Wednesday 24th July! I’m sure we will be seeing a few political figures, elite athletics and inventors around.
