The da Vinci Decathlon

On Monday the 29th of March 2021, our Year 6 and Year 5 students went to Illawarra Christian school to participate in the da Vinci Decathlon competition. The da Vinci Decathlon is an interschool gala day conducted in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon with each team competing in ten academic disciplines.

"There were 320 students, 21 different schools and 40 different teams! We all learnt how to cooperate and problem-solve as a team throughout our experience! We competed in ten events such as Mathematics, Art and Poetry, Ideation, Cartography, Engineering, English, Creative producers, Legacy, Codebreaking and Science.

"Working with other schools was a great way to socialise with people who learn the same things as us. Reset Recess, a great brain break that Illawarra Christian School provides. It teaches us information in fun games so that it is still enjoyable! Overall, this was an amazing day and a great experience to be a part of!" - Nadia H & Savannah T

"Our Year 5 team were fortunate enough to come 2nd in the engineering event. In this event, we had to create a moon rover, and our team made a spider bot that could crawl over the moon's surface. This required us to think outside the box, problem-solve, make a prototype of our design and analyse whether the prototype was sustainable for the environment. However, there were some challenges like Ideation, Mathematics and the hardest of all code-breaking, but our team worked together and persevered." Katie H, Xavier O and John C

CEDoW Wollongong Environment Network (WEN)

On Friday 26th March some of our year 6 students and Mrs Staples attended the CEDoW Wollongong Environment Network (WEN) Student Ambassador Day hosted by St Paul’s in Albion Park.

Our students were asked to present to representatives from around 20 other schools from across our Diocese. They did a wonderful job showcasing the amazing things we have put in place at St Pius X including our new worm bins, gardens, waste management system and reusable canteen containers.
It was a great day that provided our students with food for thought on where we can go next on our Ecological Journey to care for our common home.
