Dear Parents and Caregivers of St Pius X,
On Friday 15 August, we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, one of the most important feast days in the Catholic Church.
The Assumption tells us that, at the end of her life on earth, Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul into Heaven. This was God’s way of honouring Mary for her deep faith, her “yes” to His plan, and the way she lived with love, humility, and trust in Him.
This feast is a joyful reminder of our own call to live faithfully and follow Jesus’ example. At St Pius X, we will mark this special day with a school prayer in the hall at the end of Recess.
We invite families to take time together on this day to reflect on Mary’s life and the inspiration she offers us in our own journey of faith.
Long Service Leave
Prior to my appointment at St Pius X, my husband and I planned an Italian holiday. I will be absent from St Pius X during Weeks 8, 9 and 10 of Term 3, and during Week 1 of Term 4. Following discussions with CEDoW and recruitment processes, I am delighted to announce the following acting appointments whilst I am on leave:
Acting Principal - Mrs Christine Nunes
Acting Assistant Principal - Mrs Shay Lindner
Acting Middle Leader 2 - Mrs Trish Burrows
I extend my congratulations to Christine, Shay and Trish, and am confident that the school will be in very good hands.
During this time, Mrs Patricia (Trish) Belcher will teach Mrs Lindner's class and will also assist in Kindergarten to provide time for Mrs Burrows to attend to her Middle Leader 2 duties. Mrs Cathy Zamroz will remain teaching 4R in her usual capacity. Mrs Belcher knows our school very well and is well known to our students.
Mr Sajdovski and Miss Jaklic are also taking some planned Long Service Leave. Coincidentally, we will all be in Italy, but not in the same place at the same time!
Mr Sajdovski will be on leave for Weeks 8, 9 and 10 of this term. His class will be taught by Mrs Chloe Smith (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and Mr Frank Timpano (Thursdays and Fridays).
Miss Anna Jaklic will be on leave for Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 3 and Week 1 of Term 4. Her class will be taught by Miss Tierney Dunne.

Growing Positive Attitudes and Learning Dispositions
At St Pius X, we know that a child’s attitude to learning is just as important as the skills and knowledge they develop. The way children approach their learning – their mindset, persistence, curiosity, and willingness to take on challenges – are all part of what we call learning dispositions.
These dispositions include qualities such as:
- Resilience – Bouncing back after mistakes or challenges.
- Curiosity – Asking questions and seeking to understand.
- Collaboration – Working positively with others.
- Perseverance – Sticking with a task even when it gets tricky.
- Self-reflection – Thinking about how to improve.
Why do they matter?
Students with strong learning dispositions are better able to manage setbacks, problem-solve, and stay motivated. These skills set them up for success in all areas of life – not just in the classroom.
How teachers are building these at school:
- Designing learning tasks that encourage problem-solving and creative thinking.
- Allowing students to make mistakes and find solutions themselves before stepping in.
- Providing opportunities for students to work in pairs and groups to build collaboration skills.
- Using feedback to guide students towards self-reflection and improvement.
- Encouraging students to “have a go” and learn from setbacks.
- Celebrating persistence and effort as much as achievement.
How parents can help at home:
- Praise effort over results – focus on how hard they tried and the strategies they used.
- Normalise mistakes – share times you’ve learned from getting something wrong.
- Encourage curiosity – explore their questions together and model being a learner yourself.
- Let them problem-solve – allow space for them to work through challenges before offering the answer.
- Celebrate persistence – notice when they stick with something difficult.
- Promote independence – let them take responsibility for small tasks and decisions.
By working together, home and school can help children develop the positive attitudes and learning dispositions they need to thrive as life long learners.

We wish our Year 3 students all the very best as they celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation next Monday.
Last week, our Year 6 students joined other schools from our Diocese to celebrate Mass with the Bishop at St Therese, West Wollongong. They represented SPX with pride, singing joyfully and participating beautifully in the liturgy. Well done Year 6.

Every Crack Makes You Stronger!
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall,
A proud egg with dreams so tall.
He loved the view, the sky so blue,
But what happened next, no one knew.
Humpty, don't give up, you’re not done!
Your journey’s just begun!
Look at your cracks — they make you unique,
It’s not the end, but a chance to seek.
The journey of healing was not so quick,
It took time, patience, and a little bit of grit.
Humpty Dumpty’s inner strength was found,
Not in his shell, but in the heart’s sound.
The greatest strength lies within your mind,
Not in your shell, but in the will to find.
The wall that once seemed so high and grand,
Now beckoned him, a test to withstand.
Humpty had learned and grown so strong,
But could he face the place he once went wrong?
Your strength is in your mind, not in your shell!
It’s not the fall that defines who you are,
It’s how you rise, and how you go far.
The cracks may remain, but they don’t make me weak,
For inside, I have strength that I now can seek.
It’s all about the mind, the strength we hold,
With inner courage, we break the mold.
We rise, we rise, from every fall,
We’ve got the strength to stand tall!
Through cracks and breaks, we’ll always find,
That true strength lives in the mind!
On Friday, the SPX Wakakirri Team will take to the stage at Wollongong Entertainment Centre to perform their story-dance of ‘Every Crack Makes You Stronger.’ The team of students, parents and staff have worked tirelessly over the past 2 terms to bring this performance to life! We can’t wait to hear about all the experiences the students have had with the lead up and the actual performance. Stay tuned on SPX Socials for updates throughout the day and after. We wish SPX all the best for showtime!

Year 3 Excursion to Stanwell Park Reserve
On August 8th, Year 3 went on an excursion. It was great!
On the bus trip to Stanwell Tops, we saw lots of cool things, like the old abandoned road that’s now replaced by The Sea Cliff Bridge. Alongside it was a really long blue line marking the bicycle race course. On our arrival, we saw hang gliders and paragliders in the sky after they took off from Bald Hill. We then put our bags down in the covered area and started our first activity which was an Ochre ceremony. During the ceremony we all got different patterns marked on our faces telling us about identity. The marks painted on my face made me a warrior. We also participated in aboriginal dances, where we copied the movement of the kangaroo and the emu. They were very fun!
After that, we had lunch and we got to play on the sand and grass. The handball games and playing catch were loads of fun even when someone accidentally threw it in the bushes. I luckily rescued it. At the end of lunch we got to throw boomerangs correctly. Some people were lucky enough to have their boomerangs fly back to the thrower. We also learnt about bush tucker and I explained how the sheoak seed tasted after I chewed on it for a while. The coastal wattle leaves are crushed and rubbed together to make soap. We participated in a smoking ceremony as well and looked at different tools they used. Finally we returned on our bus back to school. It was a great day and we thank the teachers for taking us.
