Dear Parents and Carers,
A very warm welcome back to the final school term for all of our families. It was wonderful to greet the children on Monday and I thank you for presenting them so well in their Summer Uniforms. Walking around the school I am impressed with the classroom routines in place and the commitment the children are showing to their learning. Our senior students have been outstanding role models on the playground and I am grateful for their leadership.
I look forward to a wonderful term of learning and enjoying the many celebrations that the end of a school year brings. At present, I am working with Year Six parents on planning a fitting COVID safe farewell for our students and some fun activities to celebrate their end to primary school. As the term progresses I will communicate our end of year plans for the remainder of the students. Please be assured that the safety of our community will be paramount in my decision making around these events.
Last Sunday marked Mission Sunday, World Mission Day, or Mission Sunday, was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926, to remind Catholics about their commitment and support to the missionary work of the Church through prayer and sacrifice. In his annual message the Pope states that the Covid-19 pandemic is an opportunity for mission and service to others. My hope is that we continue to work as a community at St Pius X Catholic Primary School, Unanderra and reach out to those in need.
Yours Sincerely,
Pauline Chrostowski - Principal

Playground Update
The proposed location of the adventure playground behind the basketball court has proven a complex issue. Unfortunately the site is not cost effective to remove fill and soil in this area. However, as the area has been previously ‘encapsulated’ under layers of a special fabric, the best and safest option is to leave this in place. We do intend to re-turf this area and return the space into use as a passive area.
We will now consider an alternate location and suitable design for the revised future playground and will consult with the Parents and Friends throughout this process.

Mission Month
The Arrupe Centre in Cambodia is the focus mission for 2020. It was established by Bishop Kike in 2001 to help empower children and young adults with disabilities. At the heart of this centre is the restoration of the dignity and rights of those affected by landmines by giving them the opportunity to study, work and rebuild their lives. Bishop Kike wears a unique crucifix called the Disabled Christ.
On Friday the 30th October (Week 3) we will be hosting a crazy sock day where students are invited to wear crazy socks to school and bring in an optional gold coin donation.
Catholic Mission receives our financial assistance to support initiatives that promote human dignity and our participation in outreach presents valuable lessons in resilience and compassion and reminds us that we are part of a global Catholic community.

Pick Up / Drop Off
School Zone Parking and Arrival and Dismissal Concerns
The safety of all of our students is our number one priority. We Thank all of our parents who have been keeping this at the forefront of their actions when dropping off and picking up their children.
It is of great concern that we are continuing to have issues raised by parents, residents and staff regarding near misses and unsafe parking and crossing practices outside the Cummins Street office gate and the parking lot on the old Wests Gym site.
We are currently in discussion with the police, Service NSW and Western Suburbs leagues Club to look at changes that will minimise the risk to students, parents and other road users.
Please be alert and exercise the utmost caution at arrival and dismissal times.
We have also been able to OPEN the TOP GATE adjacent to the School Hall, please use this gate and crossing when able.

Parish News
Dear friends,
This week I thank the Parish Finance Council (PFC) for providing a special message to you all - attached as "Message From Parish Finance Council". It is an important update and explanation of the situation so far this year and of some upcoming changes. I thank the volunteers on the PFC for their generous giving of their time and gifts to keep the Parish going financially, especially during these difficult times. Read more about this and other news in the Parish Bulletin attached, and please do read the full message from the Parish Finance Council as well.
Last week, connected with the Feast of St Francis, Pope Francis published a new Encyclical entitled “Fratelli Tutti: On Fraternity and Social Friendship”, which includes references to the Covid pandemic. I must confess I haven’t had time to read it yet, but am looking forward to my first opportunity to do so! You can find it here:
