Dear Parents and Carers,
Our annual parish picnic at Edmund Rice College was a wonderful community event and I thank our St Pius X families who supported this fun day. As a school we have strong links to the parish of Immaculate Conception and we are so grateful of the work of Father Duane and Sr Kerry in supporting the parish/school partnership.
Staff, alongside Father Duane will attend a spiritual retreat at Mount Keira on Monday. This retreat will focus on prayer and encounter. As a school, we have had a focus on prayer and the children have responded well to daily Christian meditation experiences in the classroom. Staff look forward to bringing new prayer experiences explored on this day back into the classrooms, including “Lectio Divina", a Latin term, meaning "divine reading". This describes a way of reading the Scriptures whereby we gradually let go of our own agenda and open ourselves to what God wants to say to us.
Thank you to all those that were able to join us at last nights Parents and Friends Meeting. Mr Whittle unpacked out National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results at this meeting. NAPLAN is a series of tests focussed on basic skills that are administered to students in years 3 and 5.
Some highlights from Mr Whittle’s presentation included:
- In the five domains of Reading, Writing , Spelling, Grammar/Punctuation and Numeracy St Pius X is above the State, Nation, Diocese and statically similar schools, excluding Year Five reading which is on par.
- A continual and strategic focus on growth and quality learning and teaching across Kindergarten to Year Six. This includes clear target setting for every child, ensuring continuous improvement for our students.
Finally, can I kindly ask that all parents encourage their child(ren) to submit their entry in the book of the year competition. Entries are due on August 15th, with winners announced at the Book Week Parade. Children may write in any genre and present their book digitally or as a hard copy. We encourage the original work of the child.
Yours Sincerely,
Pauline Chrostowski - Principal
Mary MacKillop Feast Day
On Tuesday 8th August our whole school community gathered to mark the feast day of Mary MacKillop. Year 6 led a beautiful liturgy service which highlighted the gifts of Mary MacKillop and opened the students up to thinking about how they too can be more faith filled in their words and actions, like Mary. Each class received a class set of prayer cards to remember the special occasion. We are all called at this time to think about how if we see a need, what can we do about it?
Mary MacKillop Prayer
God of the Pilgrim,
Mary MacKillop trusted your guidance in her journey of life and deepened her confidence in your will.
May we renew our trust in your
Providence to lead us to hope as we bring our prayer before you.
May we grow in the fullness of your love and the depth of your mystery.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Way, our Truth and our Life.
Amen
Father’s Day Feast
PHONICS
Between the 7th August and 25th August Year 1 students will participate in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. Please find details for the Screening check below:
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
What is phonics?
Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read. Some
children struggle with learning to read so it is important these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support they may need.
What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The test normally takes a few minutes. If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check. The check is carefully designed not to be stressful for your child.
Why use nonsense words?
The assessment includes pseudo or nonsense words to see if the student is able to use their
knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before.
If you have any further questions, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

This term has seen Stage 3 busily getting into all things learning with a full curriculum to see students through Term 3. Students are learning about Public Speaking in readiness for the CDF Public Speaking Competition and getting their creative juices flowing through engagement in the Christmas Story Art Competition. As our school focus this year on Christian Meditation, students have been honing their skills in this area through daily practice of this ancient prayer ritual. We look forward to seeing all of the great efforts of our Stage 3 students come to fruition as the term rolls on.
