Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Friday it was wonderful to see our hall abuzz with mothers, grandmothers, aunties and special friends for our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast. This event highlighted the sense of community that we have at St Pius X and as Principal, I cannot emphasise enough the profound impact of the parent / teacher relationship on learning.
A big thank you to all that attended and also for all the beautiful emails and feedback following, your support and affirmations were greatly appreciated.
The teaching staff are currently in the process of writing student reports for Semester One.
This involves collating a range of informal and formal assessments and making judgments about your child’s learning at a point in time. Semester One reports for Years One to Six will be sent to parents on Friday 24 June.
Reports are written in line with the requirements of the NSW K-6 syllabuses and grades are awarded to students following the Common Grade Scale.
At the Parent Teacher Interviews in Week 10, your child’s class teacher will be able to explain how the grade awarded reflects the level of work your child is currently achieving. According to the Common Grade Scale a ‘C’ grade is considered sound. That is, if awarded a C in a particular KLA, the student has demonstrated that they have gained the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of them at that point in time.
I also encourage you to focus on the effort section, as it describes the application that your child demonstrates in the classroom towards their learning.
Please note whilst Kindergarten will not receive a formal report in Semester One, parents will have the opportunity for an interview in Week 10 and further details will be sent home regarding this.
Yours Sincerely,
Pauline Chrostowski - Principal
Feast of the Ascension – 21st May
The Feast of the Ascension commemorates a pivotal moment in the life of Jesus Christ. After His resurrection, Jesus spent forty days appearing to His disciples and teaching them about the Kingdom of God. On the fortieth day, Jesus ascended into Heaven before the eyes of His disciples, promising to send the Holy Spirit to guide and empower them. As a school community we will be marking this feast within class prayer and activities.
Laudato Si Week 2023
Laudato Si Week 2023 is an extraordinary event that celebrates and emphasises the significance of Pope Francis' ground-breaking encyclical, Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home. This week-long observance aims to inspire and call upon individuals, communities, and institutions worldwide to take action for the preservation and stewardship of our planet. Recognising the urgent need for environmental sustainability and social justice, Laudato Si Week fosters dialogue, education, and concrete initiatives that promote ecological awareness and responsible living. By focusing on the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic issues, this event highlights the vital role each of us plays in protecting the Earth and promoting a more harmonious relationship between humanity and nature. Laudato Si Week 2023 serves as a powerful reminder that our collective efforts are essential in safeguarding the planet for future generations, and it reinforces the urgent call to transform our lifestyles and systems in order to build a more sustainable and equitable world.
Students of St Pius X will be participating in activities throughout the week to mark this special occasion, be sure to ask your children about what they have engaged with.
School Social Media and Communication
Our school online presence and communication is an important part of keeping our school community connected. As you know, technology has brought us amazing platforms to share exciting news and information.
We have our school's official Facebook and Instagram pages, which are super fun and filled with all the latest updates about school events, activities, and important announcements. Our school P and F committee have also established a facebook page in order to communicate with our families about all things Parents and Friends. If you haven't already, be sure to follow and like these pages which can be found on the links below.
At this point however we wanted to remind you that these official pages are the ONLY ones endorsed by our school. We work hard to ensure that the content shared there is reliable, informative, and represents our school community in the best possible way. You can trust that any news or updates shared on these platforms come directly from our school.
COMPASS is another official school means of communication and serves as a hub for all school-related correspondence. This portal enables us to ensure that everyone stays on the same page and has easy access to important information. Plus, it's a convenient and secure way to keep track of school matters in one place. Updates occur regularly throughout the week, sometimes throughout the day.

Walk to school safely day
Primary school aged children across Australia can take important steps towards a healthier future by participating in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 19 May 2023.
SPX students and families are welcomed to meet Mrs Hertsch and teachers at Unanderra oval, 8.30am to walk to school together.
National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term well-being of our children. Apart from the physical benefits, regular walking also has a favourable impact on children’s cognitive and academic performance.
TIPS TO GET WALKING
1. Walk some or if you can, walk all the way to school
2. Get off the bus, train, or tram a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way
3. Leave the car at least 1km away from school and walk the rest of the way
4. Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier to fit in a walk to school
5. If you can’t walk in the morning, walk home after school.
