Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of St Pius X.
It is certainly apt, that St Pius, Pope between 1903 and 1914 had a wonderful connection with children. In particular he had a strong interest in the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. As a school we acknowledged the day by wearing red and blue mufti clothes and participating in activities about the history of our school. We also reflected on the importance of our community today.
I was fortunate enough to work with the Infants children on the day.
Here are some of their responses to the question that I posed: What is the best thing about St Pius X Unanderra?
“I like everything”. Ezekial Yr 1
“I like the Principal’s Office”. Stephanie KR
“All the teachers are good”. Allegra Yr 1
“I like learning about Jesus”. Zia KR
and one that made me smile…..
“The Principal protects us.”. Evie Yr 1
Learning and Teaching
A mantra that I regularly refer to at St Pius X is:
Everyone at St Pius X is a learner and
Everyone at St Pius X has a story.
As part of our commitment to quality learning for all, students have clear Learning Intentions for lessons. Students know what they are learning and why. They also know what they need to do to be successful. Feedback is an essential tool that supports this and goes beyond “Well done”. Feedback is meaningful, with the intent to continue to improve.
At St Pius X we are also mindful of the importance of teacher / student relationships. The research is overwhelming that students with strong teacher relationships have been shown to be more engaged in classroom activities, have better attitudes about school, and demonstrate better academic performance.
One of my key roles as Principal is to ensure I know each of your children, their story and how I can best support them.
Yours Sincerely
Pauline Chrostowski - Principal

Council Rangers made one of their regular visits at school drop off last week.
A few tips for keeping children and others safe, and for avoiding infringements notices and fines when parking around the school:
Be aware of parking signage around the school
- “The most common parking signs in school zones are 'No Stopping' and 'No Parking' signs.
- “A 'No Stopping' sign means that the driver of a vehicle must not stop at any time on a length of road or in an area to which the 'No Stopping' sign applies - not for a minute, not for a second. “No Stopping” signs are installed in areas where clear sight is required for safety reasons, such as on the approach or departure to crossings or at intersections, Line of sight around schools is critical to both motorists and pedestrians alike. When vehicles obstruct that line of sight, tragedies occur, particularly with small children who are so difficult to see.
- “A 'No Parking' sign means that you can only stop on a length of road or in an area to which the 'No Parking' sign applies to drop off or pick up passengers.
- “Around schools these are commonly called ‘kiss and drop zones’. “You can’t stay in the zone longer than two minutes and the driver has to be within three metres of the vehicle at all times.
Thank you to those parents who continually exercise the utmost care when accessing the school.
Every child’s safety is everyone’s concern.

PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests)
Each year our students from Year 1 to 6 engage in online assessments. Our scheduled assessment time here at St Pius X is Term Three Week Eight. During this time, our students will be supported in accessing these assessments online in the areas of Mathematics, Reading and Grammar & Punctuation.
ACER’s Progressive Achievement approach is used in thousands of schools in Australia and around the world. The approach focuses on assessing and monitoring student growth over time and is underpinned by an understanding that students of the same age and in the same year of school can be at very different points in their learning and development.
Why do schools use PAT tests?
- They provide a measure of student achievement in each learning area
- There is a common achievement scale for all tests within a learning area (PAT scale scores allow teachers to compare achievement on the tests within each learning area regardless of year level and the specific test completed and to monitor progress over time)
- They are mapped to the Australian Curriculum
- They provide overall descriptions of the types of skills mastered and those still to be developed based on test performance
- Individual and group reports have automatically calculated scores and sorting functions that allow comparison of scores across students, strands, etc.
- They can be used to inform teaching and learning and to assist in planning effective and targeted learning programs.
Parish News: Week 5 and 6
Dear Parishioners and friends,
Last week's bulletin contains some beautiful words from Pope Francis about the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and some info around wearing of masks.
See also this video clip which gives some practical tips on HOW to best wear a mask (I realised I was doing it incorrectly at first!)
