Dear Parents and Carers,
As children progress through their school years, it is important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics. These skills will set them upon the path to success as adults.
This week our Year Three and Five students participated in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy), a point-in-time assessment that allows parents and carers to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy, against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
At St Pius X we use a range of data to assist in our reporting to parents and inform next steps in learning. The school Leadership Team also analyse assessment results across the school to identify areas for improvement in learning and teaching. In addition to NAPLAN other forms of assessment utilised include:
- PAT (Progressive Achievement Testing)
Students participate in PAT Tests in grades 1- 6. These tests comprise of Grammar and Punctuation, Mathematics and Reading.
- DALWOOD Testing
The Dalwood Spelling Test is a standardised test of spelling achievement for students from Kindergarten to Year Six.
- Year One Phonics Check
This assessment informs teachers of how students are progressing in phonics after 12 months of formal schooling.
- Letters and Sounds Assessments
This assessment identifies where students are up to using the grapheme / phoneme progression of Letters and Sounds.
- Student work samples
- AGAT (Acer General Ability Test)
AGAT is a test of general intellectual ability, designed to assist teachers in their assessment of students' learning potential and overall aptitude. An AGAT screener is administered to all Year Three students.
Best Start
Best Start Kindergarten Assessment identifies student's literacy and numeracy skills on entry to Kindergarten.
I look forward to reading the Semester One Reports for children in Years One to Six and celebrating the achievements of our students. Whilst Kindergarten do not receive a formal report in Semester One, there will be an opportunity for a Parent teacher interview later in the term.
Please note that parents will be sent booking details later in the week for our Semester One Interviews being held in the week commencing Monday 27th June.
At St Pius X we pride ourselves on providing quality learning experiences and meeting the individual needs of our students. With this in mind, I will leave you with one of my favourite quotes:
“Meeting the needs of all students, starts with knowing who our students are”
Elina Aguilar
Yours Sincerely,
Pauline Chrostowski - Principal

Parish Community BBQ
This Sunday there will be a wonderful parish community celebration taking place and everybody is warmly invited to attend. Please see the flyer below for details.
Second Hand Uniform Shop
Our Uniform Shop is now cashless! All Items are $5 and can be paid for by card at the front office. Parents are invited to enter the Uniform Shop, located near the office. We kindly ask that any items tried on or pulled out are put back into the correct place. Donations of clothing items are happily accepted at the office!
Late and Early Office Arrivals
A friendly reminder that if a child has arrived late (after 8.50a.m) or is going home early (before 3.10p.m) that they need to sign in at the office with a parent before going to the classrooms. We encourage parents, where possible to book appointments and other activities outside school hours.
Federal Election BBQ
St Pius X is a polling venue for the upcoming federal election on Saturday 21st May. Come along and vote and enjoy a yummy sausage sizzle. Please note Year Six students are invited to assist with serving for an hour and require a parent / guardian on site. If attending they are asked to wear their Year Six T-shirt. The BBQ will operate from 7.30a.m to approximately 4pm.
2022 SPX da Vinci Decathlon Results
The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy.
Once again this year, SPX had 2 teams participate in this day and were in training since Term 1. The teams consisted of Year 5: Isaac L, Eli R, Hudson O (Year 4, Joshua S absent), Ava H, Tiffany T, Emma V, Ava G and Ryan Y (Year 5)Year 6: Matthew C, Ike M, Xavier O, Maximus O, Joseph F, Katelyn H, Eva B, Elisabeth S (Matthew D and Ruby H absent)
These students were part of over 300 students competing in teams on this day and should all be very proud of their efforts and school spirit shown. A big thank you to those students who filled in at the last minute, for those students who were absent due to illness.
An extra big congratulations to our Year 6 team, who were awarded 3rd overall in the discipline of Mathematics – an enormous achievement.
The 3rd placement certificate and participation certificates will be handed out this week.

SCHOOL UNIFORMS
At St Pius X Catholic Primary School, students are required to wear full school uniform at all times unless designated by the Principal. The wearing of the correct school uniform is very important as it promotes a sense of self-worth and pride for students whilst creating a greater sense of equality among the student population despite the diverse backgrounds of our families.
For this reason our PB4L will focus on wearing the school uniform with pride over the next week or so. Classroom teachers will be monitoring the wearing of the uniform on a day-to-day basis and inappropriate dress will be brought to the attention of the students and parents. If the uniform is not worn, a note from parents is required.
HAIR
Students are required to wear their hair in a neat and tidy manner. Hair should be out of children's eyes, haircuts of an even grade and hair well brushed or combed. Please be aware of the following:
- Extreme styles, bleaching, colouring or dyeing of hair are not permitted.
- There will be no undercuts, steps or shaved lines within the hair.
- Hair should not extend to cover the eyes.
- Long hair is to be tied back or plaited.
- Ribbons and bands of school colour are to be worn.
JEWELLERY
Jewellery should be kept to a minimum – watches, chains with religious symbols are to be worn under the uniform, one pair small earrings (studs or sleepers) in the ear lobe is allowed – no multiple earrings to be worn, or single piercings.
PLEASE LABEL ALL ITEMS OF UNIFORM CLEARLY WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME
DEDICATION OF THE ROSARY – MONTH OF MAY
Throughout the Month of May students will be learning to say the Rosary (in part or whole) every Friday as a dedication to Mary the Mother of Jesus. If students would like to bring in their own rosary beads to support this prayer dedication they are very welcome to do so.
UPCOMING FEAST DAY: OUR HELP OF CHRISITIANS – AUSTRALIA’S PATRON SAINT
On Tuesday 24th May we celebrate the special feast of the patron of Australia, Mary, Help of Christians. Each country of the world has a patron saint, that is someone who is special to the people of that country for some particular reason. They are special friends of God and so we pray to that saint and ask them to intercede on our behalf with God and ask God to hear our prayers. We can ask Mary’s special help and guidance so that we may remember and appreciate what a wonderful country we live in. May we be grateful people who genuinely value the great gifts this country gives us. Students of St Pius X will be participated in a liturgy service within their classrooms to mark this special day.
CLASS MASSES
This term we are very fortunate to re-start attending Mass with Fr Duane at the Immaculate Conception Church. Fr Duane has generously agreed to offer a ‘teaching Mass’ outside of normal parish Mass, for each grade. Masses will take place within Term 2 and Term 4 due to Fr Duane taking a period of leave. Students will be able to participate in all parts of the Mass under the wonderful tutelage of Fr Duane, Deacon Darren, Sr Kerry and their classroom teachers. We are very thankful to Fr Duane for his flexibility and support in order to foster the spiritual development of our students.
LAUDATO SI WEEK
LAUDATO SI’ WEEK 16th – 24th May is a global celebration where we remember Pope Francis urging us in his encyclical Laudato Si’ to hear the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor and to humbly place ourselves in communion with our common home. Today, we celebrate our part in the great progress the whole Church is making on its journey towards the seven Laudato Si’ Goals set before us by Pope Francis to achieve ecological conversion. Students of St Pius X have participated in daily prayer throughout the week coupled with Laudato Si inspired activities.
COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP IMPROVING LEARNING – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
This week teachers across Years 1 – 6 will be released from class to engage in collaborative processes around the areas of Literacy (Years 1 – 2) and Numeracy (Years 3 – 6). Teachers will work with Mrs Christine Nunes (Assistant Principal) and Ms Louise Sartor (Instructional Coach) on research based best practice and strategies within these areas to gain the best possible learning outcomes for their students.
