Dear Parents and Carers,
As Semester One, comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership with St Pius X Unanderra. The importance of genuine relationships between home and school ensures optimal learning and faith development for our students.
I was reminded of this unique relationship during the week when two students “popped in” to chat to me about an issue of concern. How wonderful that they felt the trust and confidence to be able to do this. I am also thankful to you as parents, for discussing openly with staff, not only your positive feedback but also any concerns that you have and in the words of Pope Francis this ensures that:
“ a school becomes a place of dialogue and peaceful encounter, promoting attitudes of respect, listening, friendship and a spirit of partnership” Pope Francis 2013
My hope is that you are able to spend some quality time as a family over the student vacation period. I look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday 18th July.
Yours Sincerely
Pauline Chrostowski (Principal)

Staffing News
This week we farewell our beautiful School Support Officer, Mrs Olietta Garrety. Olietta has had over 20 years connection to St Pius X Unanderra, as a parent and staff member. Olietta has decided to step back from work and spend time with her husband Michael and her family. We wish you all the best Oli and we will miss you!
Mrs Joanne Stewart will continue to access sick leave for the first two weeks of Term Three. I thank Mrs Kim Norrie for agreeing to continue within the role of Year Two Red Classroom teacher during this time and her exceptional support of the class.
Ms Alana Sullivan, our Pastoral Support Worker has decided to retire away from her role, I thank Alana for her amazing commitment and dedication to our students. Catholic-Care will now undertake a recruitment process for Alana’s position.
Bon Voyage Father Duane!
On behalf of the students and staff, we wish Father Duane the very best for his upcoming trip on the 9th July. Father Duane is flying to Canada to visit his family. We will miss his presence, but know we are in good hands with Sr Kerry Gardiner and the Diocesan Priests that will relieve Fr Duane during this time. Father Duane returns on the 4th September and any parish enquiries can be made to Sr Kerry Gardiner in his absence.Kerry.Gardiner@sosj.org.au
Children Returning To School After A Significant Injury
The care and safety of a student with a significant injury while at school is crucial. Parents of a student who has sustained an injury such as a broken or badly sprained arm, leg or foot injury requiring a boot or crutches, and cannot participate in normal school or sports activities, are asked to present the school with a Medical Certificate signed off by a third party Medical Practitioner prior to returning to school.
The certificate needs to state that the student is medically fit to attend school, the activities he/she is able to participate in and the activities the child should not participate in.
Once the certificate is received the school will conduct a risk assessment for the student before the child can return to school. Until the risk assessment is completed, injured students as described above will not be able to attend class.
The Risk Management Plan will remain in place at school until a further medical certificate is provided clearing the student to resume normal school activities.
I ask that parents adhere to this process as school staff must adhere to Work, Health, and Safety requirements.

Sport News
On Thursday 23 June (Wk 9), the SPX community came together to participate in the annual Athletics Carnival at Beaton Park. It was an exciting day for all, especially for many of our Infants who participated in their first Athletics carnival. All of our students enjoyed participating in a variety of track, field and novelty events and achieved outstanding results.
Thank you to all of our parent helpers who were able to be part of the day. We really
appreciate your help.
A huge thank you to all of our SPX staff, who without them the carnival would not run.
Special mentions to Mrs Sartor for her exceptional organisational work, and Mrs Hertsch for running the carnival on the day as the Event Manager.
Ribbons, Age Champions medals & the winning House will be handed out next term (date to be confirmed). Please see the carnival results below.
Due to circumstances out of our control, we were unable to hold the Shot Put event on theday at Beaton Park, however we are hoping to complete the Shot Put event in week one next Term during PE. If this is not possible, we will be using last year’s results to determine who will be going on to the South Coast Carnival.
If your child has made the SPX Athletics team, you will receive a Compass event notification in Term 3.
The DOW South Coast Carnival will be held at Beaton Park on Tuesday 9 August.

PJ DAY! THANK YOU!
A big thank you to our very special parent helpers who volunteered their time on Friday 24th June to dispense the hot chocolates and donuts on our PJ DAY!
Thank you also to the Year 6 helpers who also gave up their time to assist on the day. It was wonderful to see students enjoying their special treats in their pjs on the day.
All donations received, after costs, will be forwarded to the Unanderra Chapter of the St Vincent de Paul Society to support their good works during this year’s winter appeal.
ATTENDANCE - EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY COUNTS
At St Pius X, we continue to promote student attendance. Thank you to our parents for the support and value that you place on your child being at school each day especially as we acknowledge the current 'Cold and Flu' season.
Now more than ever regular school attendance plays a critical role in ensuring that every student has the opportunities to succeed in later life. Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps children to build and maintain friendships with other children. When students are not at school, are late to school or leave school early, they are missing out on so much that can impact on their future learning.
From an early age, if children are taught that they need to 'show up' for school and make a commitment, this positively aids academic and career success and brings benefits in adulthood.
Every minute of every day counts and families may not be aware of just how much time is lost when a child misses minutes or days here and there from school. The statistics below may be a surprise and food for thought.
